Generation No. 1

1. Thomas Andrew1 Sanford (EzekielA, ThomasB, RichardC Sandford, RichardD, HughE, RichardF, JohnG, RichardH de Sandford, NicholasI, RichardJ, RichardK, RalphL, RichardM, RalphN, ThomasO, RichardP, RadulfusQ, ThomasR, ThomasS) was born 1608 in Hatfield, Broad Oaks, Essex, England, and died 9 Oct 1681 in Milford, New Haven Co., CT. He married (1) Dorthea Meadows Sep 1629 in Herts, England, daughter of Henry Meadows and Margaret Preston. He married (2) Sarah Meadows 1636 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA, daughter of Henry Meadows and Margaret Preston.

Notes for Thomas Andrew Sanford:

Thomas Sanford (1-1) first appeared in the Town Records of Dorchester, Massachusetts. Dorchester was settled in 1630, but no lands were allotted until 3 April 1633. It is now a part of Boston and called South Boston and Dorchester. The town records begin 16 Jan 1632. The first settlers were prior to 1636 were one hundred and thirty eight in number, and Thomas Sanford was one of them. He was made a Freeman on 9 March 1637. This right or title conferred upon the holder the right of suffrage and also an advantage in the division of lands. The principal qualification for this position was church membership in a Congregational church. Much reference is made in the notes as to the term "freeman". A freeman was required to be of godly walk and conversation, required to be at least twenty years of age, to take the Freeman's Oath of allegiance to the government of Massachusetts, to be worth £200, to hold office if elected or pay a fine of forty shillings, to vote at all elections or pay same fine.

He was allotted land in Dorchester in 1635. He entered into an agreement to look after the town cows for the season of 1635 and 1637. It is believed that he married in Dorchester and this his first two children were born there. It is also believed that he stayed there until after April, 1640, when the parcel of land was granted to him that had been previously only "booked" to him. He was surely in Milford in January, 1642, when he joined the church. His third child, Mary, is recorded in the records of the First Church of Milford as having been born in January 1641.

Milford land records indicate that he was allotted land there beginning in 1643. His name appears in other instances over the years as late as 1680. They indicate that he bore his part and was held in the good opinion of this neighbors, that he was a frugal and industrious citizen, which was shown by the amount of his estate, appraised 21 Oct 1681, soon after his death at over £450. Two of his sons, Ezekiel and Samuel became quite wealthy for those times. Records indicate that he could read, write, and "cast accompts (accounts)." His will shows him to have been a prosperous, successful man, of a kindly and generous nature and of exceptional character.

Thomas Sanford arrived in the colonies with his younger brother Andrew and his uncle, Andrew Warner, in 1632 at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He sailed on the ship Arabella as part of the Winthrop Fleet. Many ships over many months came as a part of that activity. He, one brother and their uncle, traveled as single men. He married Dorothea Meadows in Dorchester and they had two children. She died shortly after. He married Sarah Meadows and they set out for Hartford, Connecticut, where some of his relatives had settled, then went on to Milford, Connecticut, where they made their home and had more children. They became an important part of that community by owning property and being very active in both church and civic affairs. They were considered among the founders of Milford, Connecticut. All but the first two children were born at Milford and the parents were buried there. He was married to Sarah Meadows in 1641 in Dorchester. There are no stones marking their graves. The oldest stone marker is 1726, Mrs. Samuel Sanford. Maid Sara Whitlock is mentioned in his will. (Source: Elizabeth Wallace)

Additional information on the ancestors of Thomas Sanford is located on Brøderbund World Family Tree, Volume 8, Pedigree #3331. This provides a vital link to Nicholas deSandford and his spouse, Alice Botilier. Alice is a descendant of Henry II, King of England, and links the Sanford family with the royal families of the United Kingdom and other royal families on the continent.

Dennis BeMent (August, 1997)

An excellent published record of the Sanford Family in America is available in some libraries entitled: Thomas Sanford Genealogy - The Emigrant to New England, 1610-1910 by Carlton E. Sanford, Potsdam, New York; c., 1911, The Tuttle Company, Rutland, Vermont. This is a two volume set consisting of 1612 pages and over 18,000 Sanford descendants. One known set is located at the Orlando Public Library, Orlando, Florida. Reference numbers are included for many of the descendants as assigned from the original publication. In order to provide an efficient reference to that publication the following is an interpretation of that reference: 4-141/110 would indicate David Sanford, who was of the fourth generation, individual #141, with the first reference of him in the original publication located on page 110. A reprint of the above 1911 book is aslo available from the Higginson Book Company in Salem, Massachusetts.

There appears to be considerable confusion in ascertaining all of the pertinent information on Thomas as there were other Sanford's that emigrated to American and many others by the name Thomas. The author of the book, Carlton E. Sanford, indicates that Thomas' first two (of seven) children were born in Dorchester and the other five in Milford. He does not, however, acknowledge that the first two children were from a first wife as indicated in some later records. Carlton Sanford indicates that Thomas was not a part of the Winthrop Fleet. Later records indicate that he was in fact part of one of those crossings.

Generation No. 2

2. Ezekiel2 Sanford (Thomas Andrew1, EzekielA, ThomasB, RichardC Sandford, RichardD, HughE, RichardF, JohnG, RichardH de Sandford, NicholasI, RichardJ, RichardK, RalphL, RichardM, RalphN, ThomasO, RichardP, RadulfusQ, ThomasR, ThomasS) was born 1637 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA, and died 5 Oct 1683 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT. He married Rebecca Whelpley 25 Apr 1665 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT.

Notes for Ezekiel Sanford:

Ezekiel Sanford (2-2) settled in Fairfield, Conneticuit before 1660 where he died only two years later than his father. Was a Freeman there in 1669. His grave is not known. The inventory of his estate shows that he was a tanner and a large land owner for his time. He divided the greater part of his lands among his children during his life time. At his death his estate amounted to £356, which in his day was about $1,200.

His widow administered upon his estate, but died before it was settled, which was done by a writing signed by all the heirs in 1697, the husbands of the married daughters signing for them.

He names a son Thomas for his father, a daughter Sarah for his mother, daughters Mary and Elizabeth for his sisters.

Thomas Sanford Genealogy

c., 1911, p. 91

There appears to be some confusion concerning whether Thomas Sanford was married just once, or possibly two times. It is certain that he was married to Sarah Meadows, but she is believed to have been his second wife. The original Thomas Sanford Genealogy makes no mention of Dorthea Meadows as having been his first wife, or the mother of Ezekiel Sanford. Other records indicate that Thomas was married (1) to Dorthea Meadows which would have made Ezekiel 2-3 years old at the time of her death. The Sanford book lists all seven children having been born to Ezekiel and Sarah (Meadows) Sanford; who was most likely the sister of Dorthea Meadows.

The descendants of Ezekiel and Rebecca (Whelpley) Sanford are further researched on Brøderbund World Family Tree, Volume 13, Pedigree #2862. This pedigree contains about 362 of their descendants (including spouses). Another 132 descendants are researched on Brøderbund World Family Tree, Volume 13, Pedigree #2178.

Thomas Andrew Sanford, Jr. (2-5) was a freeman in 1669 and was allotted land in 1680. In the drawing, his lots fell on the east side of the East River in what was first called North Farms, afterward Parish of North Haven and in 1786 became the town of North Haven, CT.

In 1721 he deeded forty acres to his son Samuel, two pieces to his grandson William, and to his son John all his estate personal and real, wherein the son John agreed to well, comfortably and honorably maintain "me and my wife so long as we shall live and give a comely and decent burial to our bodies, and to pay at my death to my daughter Anna Abbot £4, to my daughter Sarah Beach £5 and to my grand-daughter Elizabeth Huminston £8". He was one of the original members of the Woodbridge Congregational Church, and was honored by his fellow townsmen and took a deep interest in the church. He made the church a present of a Baptismal Bowl and Communion Service which, it was said, was still in use in 1910. At his death he left a large landed estate, which was afterwards sold, and from which, with other funds which he also gave the parish, was derived a large part of the society's present fund for the support of the gospel.

As an appreciation of his services the following inscription was placed upon the monument erected to his memory:

"Captain Stephen Sanford of Woodbridge departed this life on the sixth day of January, 1779, in the 72nd year of his age. His character was reputable as a man and a Christian. He had the advancement of Christ's kingdom in this place so much the largest part of his estate, amounting to £930 L. M. and appropriated the same to the support of the ministry in this society. This society, therefore, as an acknowledgment and lasting memory of their gratitude for so liberal and distinguished a benefaction, at their own expense have erected this monument."

On graduation he settled in practice at Tarriffville, Connecticut, where he practiced for nearly sixty years. He was President of the County Medical Society for the years 1874 and 1881, and Vice President of the State Medical Society for the years 1875 and 1882; also a member of the Lyceum of Natural History of the Berkshire Medical Institution and the American Medical Asociation.

He was a Justice of the Peace, Postmaster under Harrison and Tyler, school visitor for over fifty years, member of the House of Representatives for the years 1845, 1871 and 1875.

Dr. Sanford was a most kind and benevolent person. He won the esteem of all, and was held in universal respect, standing foremost as a public spirited man in ecclesiastical and municipal affairs as well as in his profession. No nights were too dark nor storms too hard to bar him from visiting the sick. It was a relief to him to give relief to others.

He was ever at service on Sunday unless sickness called him away, where he was efficient in song and a pillar in the church. Thus he continued and lived until 1885 when he became totally bling as a result of being thrown from his carriage on 21 Feb 1883, and again on 3 May, of the same year.

At the age of 76 his children gave him a surprise party, when his former pastor, the Rev. William Goodwin, read an appropriate poem. On his 80th birthday his children, to the third generation, assembled at his home to greet and to pay homage to the kindly, generous and loving veteran and father. He and his wife had twelve children.

Sheldon7 Sanford (Oliver6, Oliver5, David4, Samuel3, Ephraim2, Thomas Andrew1, EzekielA, ThomasB, RichardC Sandford, RichardD, HughE, RichardF, JohnG, RichardH de Sandford, NicholasI, RichardJ, RichardK, RalphL, RichardM, RalphN, ThomasO, RichardP, RadulfusQ, ThomasR, ThomasS) was born 18 Aug 1798 in Poultney, Rutland Co., VT, and died Jan 1870 in Washtenaw County, MI. He married Phoebe Narisa Nash 1820.

Notes for Sheldon Sanford:

Sheldon Sanford (7-2446) moved to Ohio about 1818. He was a farmer and also ran a saw mill. In the days of training he was Captain of a company of Militia for many years. He removed to Oakville, Michigan about 1858. (Thomas Sanford Genealogy, c., 1911, p. 514).

He was living in Knox County on 2 Nov 1821, when he purchased three acres from Seth and Rachel Nash. Sheldon paid $40 for this land in the northeast corner of the SW 1/4 of Bloomfield Township, Section 14, about two miles southwest of Sparta, Ohio along the old state road that ran from Mansfield to Columbus, Ohio. Seth Nash had built the first blacksmith shop in the area just four years earlier in 1817. (Source: O.L. Baskin & Co., "History of Morrow County, Ohio 1880", Chicago, 1880, p. 456).

Bloomfield Township, Ohio was part of Knox County until 1848. It was first settled in 1813 when three men from Mr. Vernon, Knox County, pushed west into an unbroken forest with deer, large turkeys and wolves were an everyday sight. Sheldon and his brothers probably were not far behind. (Source: O.L. Baskin & Co., "History of Morrow County, Ohio 1880", Chicago, 1880, p. 456).

Through the years Sheldon continued to aquire land. On 17 Jun 1852 began selling off his land holdings and in about 1854 or 1855 he moved his family, including Reuben, from Ohio to Michigan. Thus, the Sanford move was probably made at or near the time that John and Fannie Hooker made the same relocation. In 1860, Sheldon and Phoebe were living in London Township, Monroe Co., Michigan, just a few miles from John and Fannie Hooker.

According to his grave marker, Sheldon Sanford died in 1871, although the LDS Ancestral File, Version 4.17, cites a death date of January 1870. His wife died seven years after him of dropsy, and both are buried at Raleighville Cemetery southeast of Milan, Michigan on Townsend Road.

Sheldon could also be related to Samuel Harrison Sanford (b. 7 Jun 1818, d. 6 Oct 1875) and Elizabeth (b. 13 Feb 1824, d. 5 Mar1901) of Wyandot County. These possible relatives of Sheldon are buried at the Tymochtee Cemetery in Wyandot County.

Willis D. Sanford (9-10246) was educated at Batavia High School, from which he was graduated. He was elected Mayor of Batavia, New York for seven terms, police justice for six terms, and Alderman two terms. He also was a member and official in several fraternal societies.

While digging in his garden he came upon the bones of a mastodon that died several thousand years ago and which the ages since had kindly covered with soil. The bones were close together. A tooth with ten prongs was in perfect condition. Some of the vertebrae measured seventeen inches wide and ten inches thick with a bore for the spinal cord four and one-half by three inches. He thought that any man with such a backbone could run for Presient.

Additional information on her ancestors are researched via Thomas Andrew Sanford, her sixth great grandfather, and is located on Brøderbund World Family Tree, Volume 8, Pedigree #3331. This provides a vital link to Nicholas deSandford and his spouse, Alice Botilier. Alice is a descendant of Henry II, King of England, and links the Sanford family with the royal families of the United Kingdom and other royal families on the continent, and therefore the Bement line links with Sanford, and royal line, at this branch of the Bement tree.

Notes for Willis Anson Hooker:

Willis Anson Hooker used the name William, but eventually came to be known as Billy. When the Civil War broke out, Willis was ten years old and had a great desire to join the fight. His mother Fannie gave her consent provided Willis would stand guard all night at a dismal swamp near their home. That soon took ideas of war out of his head, and Willis spent the remainder of the war at home without complaining.

In 1874 Willis was farming on their Section 32 plot in Augusta Township, Michigan. Within a few years, however, Willis left his father's farm to marry Harriet Miles in 1881.

On the occasion of his 89th birthday, Willis recalled that when President Lincoln was shot, "Secess" folks who made remarks not deemed complimentary toward Lincoln were "egged" out of town by angry citizens. A storekeeper with a bushel of eggs furnished the ammunition.
